MT569/MT664/MK774: READING THE BIBLE CONTEXTUALLY. Joel B. Green and Keon-Sang An.

DESCRIPTION: An exploration of the role of context – both ancient and modern – in interpretive approaches to Scripture. Participants will grapple with the importance of a series of “locations” for reading Scripture, including ancient settings, settings within the canon of Scripture, settings within the church over time, and contemporary locations, as they take seriously the significance of “reading from this place.”

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: Engagement with Scripture is a central and formative task for all persons engaged in missional leadership. Coming to terms with the significance of “perspective” in one’s approach to Scripture is a prerequisite for understanding the transformative challenge of Scripture.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated the ability:

1.       To articulate an understanding of reading Scripture that takes seriously the complex of settings in which biblical texts are located;

2.       To reflect constructively and critically on the contexts within and commitments from which they read Scripture;

3.       To identify the challenges of reading Scripture both ecclesially and missiologically; and

4.       To practice readings of Scripture that account for some of the multiple contexts within which biblical texts are engaged.

COURSE FORMAT: Reading in contextual hermeneutics will be augmented by lectures, questions and answers, and interpretive exercises. The course will meet intensively from 8:00 am –5:00 pm, 10-14 April 2017.
