MD500: Globalization, the Poor, and Christian Mission (4 Units: 160 hours). Kirsteen Kim and Tag Oh
DESCRIPTION: This course examines the globalization phenomenon as a deeply-rooted historical change process that has significant impact on the contemporary church and the poor. The course consists of two parts. The first part of the course examines the political, economic, and cultural dimensions of globalization and assesses it first by drawing on biblical-theological arguments and mission experience. In addition, scholars in favor of globalization and skeptics are examined, as are the major global players who have the power to shape the nature of globalization. The second part of the course briefly examines the impact of globalization on the church and global mission, but primarily focuses on the impact of globalization on the poor, the Christian responsibility toward the poor, and a critical examination of global proposals for eradicating poverty.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated (1) an understanding of the historical roots and contemporary expressions of globalization; (2) a multifaceted appreciation for the complexity and paradoxical nature of the globalization debate as it affects the poor and the global Christian church; (3) an appreciation for the complexity of the task of thinking theologically and missiologically about globalization and poverty; (4) an understanding of the impact of globalization and global institutions on the poor and the Christian responsibility toward them; and (5) ability to understand and critically assess proposals for poverty eradication at the global level.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets from 8.00 am to 5.00pm for one week for a total of 40 hours of classroom instruction through lectures, presentations, worship, and discussions.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

3. Directed Learning Activity: In teams of 3-6, students will do a class presentation and lead a discussion (total one hour), that describes and critiques a major international organization in terms of its explicit and implicit understanding of (a) who “owns” the institution, (b) its stance on globalization, and (c) its macro-development or poverty-eradication strategies. Presentations on the second-fourth days of class (25%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #4] [10 hours].
4. Book review (1,000 words) of one of the following books from the required reading: either Sachs, or Easterly, or Collier. Also, book reports about what you have read as recommended books. (Book report form provided) (25%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2 or 5, respectively] [20 hours].
5. Signature Assignment: A 12- to 15-page (3,000 to 3,750 words) critical assessment research paper on the following topic: Analyze poverty in a particular context in relation to globalization, and develop a missional response drawing on theory and theology presented in the course. (40%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1-5] [30 hours].
6. Spirituality: As part of a small group, prepare and lead a session of worship drawing on one of the assigned texts. (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcome #3] [5 hours].
